Wood floors are a beautiful addition to any home and most people prefer them to other flooring options. That being said, wood floors are also susceptible to things like nicks, gouges, scratches, and fading which can make your floor look much more worn out than it actually is. This is why wood floor repair is so essential. There are several ways to rejuvenate your floor, but with a bit of professional repair, you can have a wood floor that looks brand new, no matter how old it is.

What Influences Repair Cost

There are a few different repairs that influence the cost to repair a wood floor. Knowing what these flooring processes entail and what charges you may encounter with your wood floor repair can greatly benefit anybody working on a budget.

  • type of wood floor and finish
  • type of damage to the floor
  • size of area being repaired
  • floor layout

Consider that wood damage is common in an aged floor and most problems can be easily repaired by a professional. Do your floor boards have any of the following problems:

  • cracked wood
  • gaps between planks
  • buckles
  • cupped flooring
  • warping
  • split wood

Generally, most wood floor repairs require a professional as they are just a bit too much for the average homeowner to handle on their own. It's highly recommended that you compare as many quotes as possible from professional contractors in your area to ensure you get the best price available in your locale.

How Much Does It Cost To Repair a Wood Floor?

The average cost to repair a wood floor covers the following:

Low Cost - $100: scratches, small repairs

Average Cost - $800: sanding, possible refinishing, gouges

High Cost - $2200: re-staining, full refinishing, replacement of large sections

Low-Cost Repairs

A few common low-cost repairs that you may run into are things like scratches or small gouges that come from daily wear and tear. These are repairs that take only a few minutes to fix and may take relatively small amounts of supplies and effort. In most cases, these are repairs that, if you have the knowledge, you can complete on your own. They are still relatively inexpensive if you hire a professional. These repairs generally take less than a day and will cost around $200.

Average Cost Repairs

Things like deep gouges that need to be filled or boards that need to be completely replaced. This can also be things like refinishing small rooms, small areas of rooms, or sanding areas that have been damaged and re-sealing them to match the rest of the floor.

This type of repair is going to cost around $800 and may reach the lower $1200 range depending on how much work needs to be done.

High Cost Repairs

The last repair category to consider are those repairs that are high cost. These are things like sanding the entire floor and re-staining, resealing, and refinishing. This may also cover replacement of large sections which have been damaged and that cannot be repaired with any other methods on hand. This is most definitely a repair that is best reserved for professional companies that know what they are doing and can handle repair quickly and professionally. The cost to repair a wood floor will vary by company, but generally, intensive repairs of this kind will cost around $2,000.

Cost Breakdown

For this cost example, we will be using a 12 ft x 12 ft (144 sq ft) room. A complete wood floor repair of this area will cost between $220 - $580, or $1.50 - $4 per sq ft. This should cover sanding the floor down to bare wood, stain removal, and 2 - 3 coats of refinishing.

If you just need a recoat, also known as screening, you could end up only spend around $1 per sq ft. A 12ft x 12ft room would then cost around $150 for this type of repair.

If you need to replace or install solid wood strips it averages out to around $8 per sq ft, or $1150 to repair a 144 sq ft room. This includes materials, insulation, and site finishing. Using wider wood strips can push the rate up to around $12 per sq ft

Simple repairs can take 2 - 3 days to complete, but more complex jobs can last a few weeks. Don't forget to ask your contractor how long it will take them to complete the job they are quoting you on.
